Linux and Android Become One

The latest kernel update for Linux has been released, and features supporting Android are back for the first time since 2010, along with improved processor and networking support.

“For a long time, code from the Android project has not been merged back to the Linux repositories due to disagreement between developers from both projects,” the release notesstate. “Fortunately, after several years the differences are being ironed out. Various Android subsystems and features have already been merged, and more will follow in the future. This will make things easier for everybody, including the Android mod community, or Linux distributions that want to support Android programs.”

The Linux team has been looking at reintroducing Android since December, after theacrimonious split in 2010. After the last kernel summit in Prague, Tim Page set up theAndroid Mainlining Project and called for developers. The new kernel features have focused on putting enough code in to allow smooth cross-platform development and interoperability between Linux and the current version of Android.

Windows Server 8 Beta Out Now

Microsoft has released the beta build of its forthcoming Windows 8 Server operating system, a day after making its “Consumer Preview” of the Windows 8 client-side code available.

Microsoft Server 8 platform as having been built with virtualization and cloud support in mind. The code has version three of Windows’ virtualization platform Hyper-V, which the company promises will be able set up many more virtual systems on the same hardware, while ensuring that information can be siloed when needed.

“With Hyper-V Network Virtualization you can create virtual networks so different business units, or even multiple customers, can seamlessly share network infrastructure,” said Microsoft’s corporate vice president for servers Bill Laing in a blog posting. “You will be able to move virtual machines and servers around without losing their network assignments.”

Microsoft Cuts Down Office 365 Prices

Microsoft has taken an axe to Office 365 prices, cutting enterprise charges and giving special discounts to educational users, claiming “economies of scale” in the service.

“With these efficiencies, we’re able pass on savings to make it even more affordable for customers of all sizes to move to Office 365,” claimed Kirk Koenigsbauer, VP of Microsoft’s Office division in a blog post. “So, I’m thrilled to announce that we’re lowering the prices of most of our Office 365 for enterprise plans by up to 20 per cent. These changes are effective today at Office365.com for new and renewing direct customers. ”

The economies of scale that Koenigsbauer is claiming must be very big, indeed. According to a table posted by Microsoft partner Collabra Networks (which has since been taken down), some prices have dropped by nearly a 25 per cent, and storage costs are down 92 per cent.

Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace Closes on May 9th

People is warned  to get their last updates in now because Microsoft has announced that it will close the application marketplace for Windows Mobile 6.x users on May 9.

“Applications and games acquired from the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service installed on your Windows Mobile 6.x phone will continue to work after the service is discontinued on May 9, 2012,” said Microsoft in a letter to customers. “However, additional downloads of these applications and games from the Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service will no longer be available.”

Redmond also told users to back up their data as soon as possible, because if the phone loses any apps after the May cut-off data they won’t be able to get them back. Microsoft isn’t commenting further on how long it will continue to support the Mobile platform, but we’re betting that announcement will come sooner rather than later.

Windows 8 Enterprise Features

Microsoft has showcased some of the enterprise capabilities of its forthcoming Windows 8 operating system, including the ‘Windows To Go’ USB stick installation, and integration between Windows 7 and Windows 8 applications.

The company demonstrated new features in the upcoming operating system in a keynote speech at CeBIT in Hanover, in Germany.

Microsoft showed off the operating system’s Windows To Go technology, which lets enterprise customers burn an image of their Windows 8 operating system onto a USB drive. The drive can then be plugged into other devices, including computers running Windows 7.
